LG Smartphone Support Reaches End of Life: What Users Need to Know
The LG smartphone era is officially drawing to a close. Following the initial announcement of its exit from the smartphone market in april 2021, LG has confirmed the complete shutdown of its update servers, effective June 30, 2025. This signifies the end of software support for all remaining LG mobile devices, including the discontinuation of the LG Bridge PC software.
The Final Sunset for LG Mobile Software
According to official notifications on LG’s South korean support pages, the termination of server support means users will no longer receive Over-The-Air (OTA) updates. This encompasses critical security patches,bug fixes,and,crucially,future Android version upgrades. With the servers offline, even maintaining the functionality of existing features becomes increasingly precarious.
The LG Bridge request,previously used for device backups,restorations,and software installations,will also cease to function. Users are strongly advised to create backups of their data before the June 30th deadline to preserve their personal information.Given the increasing prevalence of mobile threats, failing to back up data could result in permanent loss.
A promise Kept, But ultimately Short-Lived
Despite its departure, LG honored its initial commitment to software support. When exiting the smartphone arena,the company pledged up to three major Android OS updates for its premium G and V series phones,as well as the Velvet and Wing models. More affordable K series and Stylo devices from 2020 were promised two updates. LG successfully delivered on this pledge, enabling flagship devices to receive updates all the way to Android 13.
Production of LG smartphones continued until July 31, 2021, to fulfill existing contracts with mobile carriers. However, the company has since strategically shifted its focus to other core business areas, including home appliances, entertainment systems, and burgeoning vehicle component technologies – a move reflecting the intensely competitive nature of the smartphone industry. Currently, the global smartphone market is dominated by Samsung (20.8% market share),Apple (17.3%), and Xiaomi (12.7%) as of Q1 2024, according to Statista.

LG’s exit doesn’t diminish its past contributions to the mobile landscape. The company consistently pushed boundaries with innovative designs and display technologies. The LG Wing, with its unique swiveling secondary screen, represented a bold attempt to redefine the smartphone experience, though its practical utility was debated.Looking further back, LG’s collaboration with Google on the Nexus 5 in 2013 produced a critically acclaimed device that subtly showcased LG’s manufacturing prowess. Prior to that, the curved displays of the G Flex series and the modular design of the LG G5 demonstrated a willingness to experiment and challenge conventional smartphone norms. These innovations, while not always commercially accomplished, helped shape the evolution of the mobile industry and left a lasting impact.
