Drill Head Remains Stuck in Linz’s Bergschlösslpark as Westring Project Continues

Linz, Austria – Efforts to dislodge a drill head stuck beneath Linz’s Bergschlösslpark continue, causing delays to the Westring highway construction project. The drill head became lodged 17 meters below the surface in late November during tunneling work for a future sewer line needed for the Freinberg tunnel.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Highway operator ASFINAG and Linz AG are collaborating on a plan to reactivate the drill head. Currently, work is focused on excavating a shaft to access the equipment. The timeline for recovery remains uncertain, according to ASFINAG.

Tree Protection Measures Completed

Despite concerns from Westring opponents, Linz AG has announced the completion of tree protection measures in the Bergschlösslpark. These measures include the installation of protective slabs to minimize damage from heavy truck traffic.

Westring Project and Future Tunnel

The stuck drill head was being used to bore a sewer line that will ultimately support the Freinberg tunnel, a key component of the Linzer Westring project. Authorities aim to complete the sewer line by summer.

Protests Continue

The Westring project has faced ongoing opposition, including protests and tree-felling disruptions in the Bergschlösslpark. Activists have occupied the park and established a protest camp since December 2nd, opposing the highway construction and the associated environmental impact. Protests are planned to continue into 2026, with the goal of halting the project. A previous petition for a public referendum on the project was deemed invalid due to an unclear question.
