Synagogue Attack in West Bloomfield, Michigan: A Targeted Act of Violence
A shooting and vehicle-ramming attack at Temple Israel, a major synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on March 12, 2026, left the suspect dead and a security guard injured. Federal authorities are investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.
Details of the Attack
The incident began at approximately 12:30 p.m. Local time when a man drove a vehicle into the synagogue building. Security personnel engaged the suspect in a shootout, resulting in his death. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the security guard was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but is expected to recover. No congregants or students present at the synagogue, including the 140 children in the day school, were harmed.
Suspect Identified
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. Citizen born in Lebanon. Ghazali arrived in the United States in May 2011 on a visa granted to spouses of U.S. Citizens and became a citizen in February 2016.
Possible Motives
Investigators have not yet determined a definitive motive for the attack. However, reports indicate that Ghazali had recently experienced a personal tragedy. According to a neighbor and a source within Michigan’s Lebanese-American community, Ghazali lost family members in an Israeli strike in Lebanon approximately ten days prior to the attack. Detroit Free Press reported on these details.
Federal Investigation
The FBI is leading the investigation, classifying the attack as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” ABC News reported this classification. Thirty law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation after the building caught fire during the attack, though the source of the ignition remains under investigation.
Official Reactions
Former President Donald Trump expressed his support for the Michigan Jewish community following the attack. The Associated Press reported on his statement. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also condemned the attack, stating that anti-Semitism and violence have no place in the state. The head of Israeli diplomacy, Gideon Sa’ar, expressed shock and emphasized the need to prevent anti-Semitism. The Jewish Federation of Detroit reaffirmed its commitment to vigilance and security.
Increased Security Measures
In anticipation of potential further incidents, authorities had increased patrols at schools and places of worship in the area. Explosive detection dogs and deminers were deployed as a precautionary measure. Sheriff Bouchard emphasized that security personnel and emergency services responded effectively to the situation.

Rising Anti-Semitic Incidents
This attack occurs amid a concerning rise in anti-Semitic incidents and attacks in the United States. In May 2025, a shooting occurred in front of the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., resulting in the deaths of two Israeli embassy staff members.
