The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. Citizen born in Lebanon. Ghazali arrived in the United States in May 2011 on a visa granted to spouses of U.S. Citizens and became a citizen in February 2016.

Investigators have not yet determined a definitive motive for the attack. However, reports indicate that Ghazali had recently experienced a personal tragedy. According to a neighbor and a source within Michigan’s Lebanese-American community, Ghazali lost family members in an Israeli strike in Lebanon approximately ten days prior to the attack. The FBI is leading the investigation, classifying the attack as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” ABC News reported this classification. Thirty law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation after the building caught fire during the attack, though the source of the ignition remains under investigation.
