Maha Kumbh Special Train Vandalized: Security Concerns Highlighted
The sacred journey of millions participating in the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, was marred by a shocking incident of violence at Harpalpur railway station in Madhya Pradesh on January 28, 2025. A Maha Kumbh Special Train traveling from Jhansi to Prayagraj was vandalized by an enraged crowd desperate to board the already overcrowded train.
As the train arrived around 1 am, a throng of devotees eager to reach Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela found themselves stranded on the platform. Frustration quickly escalated as the compartments’ doors were locked from the inside, leaving them with no way to access the train. Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, showing the crowd pelting stones, breaking window panes, and attempting to force entry into the carriages.
Passenger RK Singh recounted his harrowing experience, expressing fear and anger at the situation. He, like many others, had traveled long distances to take part in the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, only to be confronted by violence. “We just wanted to reach Prayagraj safely and participate in the Kumbh rituals,” he stated.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) intervened swiftly, successfully calming the crowd and allowing the train to resume its journey. However, the incident has sparked serious concerns about security arrangements during one of the world’s largest gatherings, with an estimated 10 crore pilgrims expected to attend the Mauni Amavasya rituals.
Assistant PRO of Jhansi Railway Division, Manoj Kumar Singh, assured the public that strict measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents. "We are coordinating with local authorities to enhance security and reviewing our crowd management strategies to handle such large-scale events effectively," he said.
In response to the event, Uttar Pradesh government has deployed additional security personnel and is utilizing advanced technology, including AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones, to monitor the sprawling grounds of the Mela.
As the Maha Kumbh continues, authorities implore pilgrims to remain patient, cooperate with security personnel, and prioritize their safety. News18 India will continue to provide updates on this significant religious gathering.
