Indian Rally Legend and Sailing Captain Missing After Maldives Speedboat Accident

A high-speed boating accident in the Maldives has left two Indian nationals missing, sparking a large-scale search operation. The incident occurred late Thursday night near Vaavu Atoll, close to Felidhoo island, when a speedboat carrying seven people capsized.

What Happened?

The speedboat overturned approximately two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo while traveling at high speed. Five people were thrown into the sea, and while five passengers were rescued, two remain unaccounted for, according to Times Now News.

Who Are the Missing?

One of the missing individuals is Hari Singh, 59, a prominent figure in Indian motorsport. He is the first Indian to win the Asia Zone Rally Championship and a five-time national champion. The second missing person is Commander Mahesh Ramachandran, captain of industrialist Gautam Singhania’s yacht, TT Ashena. ThePrint reports that Ramachandran is a former naval aviator and an Arjuna Award-winning sailor.

Gautam Singhania Involved

Gautam Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, was among those on board and was rescued with minor injuries. He has since returned to Mumbai for treatment. A spokesperson for Singhania stated he is recovering under medical care and expressed gratitude for the well-wishes, according to Republic World.

Rescue Efforts and Injuries

All seven passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees. Initial treatment was provided at a hospital in the atoll. A Russian woman and an Indian man continue to receive treatment in the Maldives, while others have been transported to India. One Indian national suffered severe injuries, including the loss of an arm, and has been flown to India for further medical attention, India Today reported.

Ongoing Search Operations

The Maldives National Defence Force launched search operations immediately after receiving information around 12:40 am. Search teams have covered extensive areas of the sea, and underwater searches are being conducted by divers. As of March 23, 2026, the missing individuals have not yet been found, and search operations are ongoing, according to police reports.
