Security Concerns Cast Shadow Over Ester Roa Stadium After Fireworks Incident
Concepción’s Ester Roa Rebolledo Stadium found itself embroiled in controversy following a recent friendly match between La U and River Plate. Amidst a thrilling 2-1 victory for the Argentine team, concerns over security lapses overshadowed the sporting spectacle. Mayor Héctor Muñoz publicly expressed his discontent, citing incidents involving fireworks smuggled into the stadium and a perceived lack of control by the private security force hired for the event.
Muñoz, visibly frustrated, stated, “We are not satisfied. It is not the situation we expected, because of what happened at the flag ceremony and in the 30th minute of the second half with the fireworks.” He emphasized the responsibility of the security company to thoroughly check entrances and maintain vigilance throughout the game, highlighting their failure to prevent these incidents.
These security breaches culminated in the rejection of the Super Cup match involving Colo Colo and La U, originally planned to be held at the stadium. While acknowledging the desire for high-profile matches in the city, Muñoz stressed, “With what happened yesterday, obviously one has doubts. The decision not to authorize the Colo Colo and La U match in the Super Cup was a good decision… There is no doubt about authorizing these things because one wants football, but not these incivilities."
The recent events prompted a call for intensified security protocols for future sporting events in the stadium. Muñoz announced stricter measures and requested greater accountability from production companies and private security firms. He highlighted the efforts of Carabineros, Chile’s national police force, in maintaining security around the stadium but insisted that internal checks must be improved.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial importance of security at public gatherings. As Concepción continues to host sporting events, concerns will inevitably linger until effective measures are taken to ensure the safety and well-being of both fans and players.
