Measles Resurgence Prompts Vaccination Urgency in California

California health officials are strongly urging residents to ensure they are up-to-date on their measles vaccinations following a recent increase in cases across the nation and globally. This resurgence is linked to declining vaccination rates, raising concerns about the potential spread of this highly contagious disease.

Rising Cases and Vaccination Rates

As of March 13, 2026, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported 26 measles cases across nine counties this year. Vaccination rates for measles have been steadily decreasing both nationally and worldwide, contributing to the re-emergence of the virus, which was once largely eradicated.

Why Measles is a Concern

“It is definitely an ‘uh-oh’ moment, not because measles is still transmissible, which it is, but because it can cause a lot of unnecessary suffering,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert with the University of California San Francisco. Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease caused by a virus that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death.

Healthcare Facilities Reinforce Vaccination Policies

In response to the increasing risk, healthcare facilities are strengthening their vaccination requirements. Some dialysis centers in the Bay Area are now requesting proof of vaccination from patients, or requiring antibody testing for those who cannot provide documentation.

Santa Clara Valley Health requires all healthcare workers to provide proof of immunity to measles. Bay Area Community Health also mandates vaccinations for employees at the time of hiring and continuously monitors and implements new requirements from state and county health departments.
