Mercedes-Benz VLE: The Electric Van Aiming for Luxury

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the VLE, its successor to the V-Class, on March 10, 2026, in Stuttgart. This modern model marks a significant shift for the brand’s van lineup, debuting as a fully electric vehicle built on the new VAN.EA platform and styled with a focus on luxury.

A New Era for Mercedes-Benz Vans

The VLE represents more than just a new model for Mercedes-Benz Vans; it’s the first vehicle built on the dedicated VAN.EA electric platform. This platform is crucial for the company’s transition to electric vans, aiming to attract a broader range of customers, particularly those seeking passenger car-like standards in a van.

Design and Dimensions

The VLE’s design takes inspiration from the S-Class, moving away from the more utilitarian glance of the Sprinter. Key design elements include a rounded body shape, a gently sloping roofline, and an optional illuminated grille with a star motif. The vehicle features retractable door handles and mirrors, vertical LED taillights, and a rear roof extension with a brake light that illuminates extensively during braking, similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The standard VLE measures 5,309 x 1,999 x 1,943 mm with a wheelbase of 3,342 mm. An extended version, measuring 5,484 x 1,999 x 1,943 mm with a 3,517 mm wheelbase, will also be available. Despite its size, the VLE boasts a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.25, comparable to the fourth-generation Fabia (0.28) and better than the Mercedes EQS limousine (0.20).

Interior and Technology

The VLE’s interior is designed for comfort and luxury, featuring soundproofing, remotely controlled rear seats, and a high level of customization. Seats are available with integrated wheels for easy removal and storage, and the “Grand Comfort” variant includes features like a wireless mobile charger, comfort cushion, lumbar support, and massage function.

Technology highlights include a panoramic 79-inch 8K resolution screen, a camera for video calls, a split-screen function, and a 22-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system. The vehicle also features a panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting. The dashboard incorporates a three-display setup, mirroring the design found in the Mercedes CLA, with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 14-inch central display, and a 14-inch passenger screen.

The VLE operates on the MB.OS operating system, equipped with artificial intelligence, wireless updates, Google smart navigation with augmented reality, and a personal assistant. Additional features include an advanced multi-zone climate control system, a 23.1-inch head-up display, a heat pump, and a dew point sensor to prevent window fogging.

Performance and Charging

The VLE is built on an 800-volt architecture and features a 115 kWh traction battery. The VLE 300, a front-wheel-drive variant with 272 horsepower, offers a range exceeding 700 km (WLTP). A four-wheel-drive VLE 400 4Matic with 415 horsepower and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.5 seconds will follow.

The VLE supports fast charging with over 300 kW DC, adding up to 355 kilometers of range in 15 minutes. It also accommodates 400-volt fast charging stations with an optional converter. The onboard charger supports AC charging at 11 kW, with an optional upgrade to 22 kW. Cheaper versions with 80 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries will be available in the future.

Additional Features

The VLE offers vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, and can integrate with photovoltaic systems. It features air suspension that adjusts based on Google map data (reducing or increasing height by up to 40 mm) and active rear-axle steering (up to 7 degrees) for improved maneuverability and passenger comfort. The vehicle includes semi-autonomous driving features, utilizing 10 cameras, 5 radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. It can tow trailers up to 2,500 kg and includes an electronic stabilization program and navigation system optimized for towing.

Future Outlook

The Mercedes-Benz VLE marks the beginning of a new era for the brand’s automotive lineup. The VAN.EA platform will also be used for larger Sprinter-type models and smaller replacements for the T-Class, with combustion engine versions also planned.
