New patented technology from Meta

Tech giant Meta has secured a patent for an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solution designed to maintain users’ social media accounts even after their death. The technology, which was patented in December, uses large-scale language models (LLM) to simulate the behavior and interactions of dead users on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
How will the AI “life support” work?
The patent application details how AI would be able to analyze past user activity, including posts, comments, reactions and communications. Based on this data, AI could create new content, respond to messages and even “participate” in discussions, giving the impression that the person is still active in their digital accounts. This would allow a person’s digital presence and memories to be preserved, allowing loved ones to stay in touch with their virtual profiles.
Potential benefits and technological challenges
The main purpose of this technology is to help people grieve by providing a channel through which they can continue to communicate with a digital “representation” of the deceased. This could provide emotional support and an illusory sense that the deceased is still present. However, the technology also raises serious ethical and technical questions. The biggest challenge is to ensure that the content produced by the AI truly reflects the personality of the deceased and is not unethical or inappropriate. There is a risk that the AI could “invent” or interpret the user’s beliefs and emotions inaccurately, creating a misleading image of the deceased.
Public response and future perspectives
As Meta tries to implement such technology, the community is divided. Some see it as an opportunity to preserve the memory of loved ones and feel their presence, while others express concerns about privacy, data use and possible emotional manipulation. What the practical implementations of this technology will be and what security mechanisms will be put in place to prevent potential abuses remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear – technology provides an opportunity to rethink our relationship with the digital world and death.
