Mobile Food Pantries Expand in Southeast Michigan to Combat Food Insecurity

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is expanding access to nutritious food for residents in need through its On-the-Travel pop-up food distribution events. In partnership with Forgotten Harvest, a fourth distribution site has been added in Clinton Township, building on existing locations in Hamtramck, Madison Heights, and Taylor.

Addressing Food Insecurity in the Region

These mobile food pantries aim to address food insecurity in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties by providing a convenient way for individuals to access fresh produce, grains, and proteins. MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel stated, “We have been able to help 850 families put food on the table through these mobile food pantries at our local offices.” The program emphasizes ensuring access to healthy food options, including culturally appropriate choices like halal and kosher-friendly items for communities with specific dietary needs.

Upcoming Distribution Dates and Locations

The On-the-Go pantries operate on a monthly basis at select MDHHS offices. Appointments are required to minimize wait times and ensure sufficient food supplies.
