Father Delivers Baby During High-Risk Labor After Midwife Leaves

A father was forced to deliver his own baby after a midwife left the room during a high-risk birth at the John Radcliffe Hospital Women’s Centre in Oxford, England. The incident, which occurred on February 21, 2026, has prompted an investigation by the Oxford University Hospitals Trust (OUH).

The Emergency Delivery

Matt Gray, a former ambulance technician, delivered his daughter, Cleo, after the midwife departed the room when complications arose during labor. Cleo was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Mr. Gray successfully unwrapped the cord, but the situation was precarious given his wife, Jo Gray’s, multiple medical conditions and the high-risk nature of the pregnancy.

What Happened in the Delivery Room?

Jo Gray initially had a positive experience with the first midwife assigned to her care, describing her as “adorable.” However, a replacement midwife arrived who Jo felt was less experienced and less communicative. According to Jo, the new midwife appeared panicked as the baby’s heart rate fluctuated during contractions.

“It went downhill from there; it was really bad,” Jo Gray told the Banbury Guardian. She described the midwife’s increasing panic and abrupt departure shortly before the baby was due to be born. The midwife briefly returned before leaving again for 15 minutes.

Father Steps In

With the midwife absent, Matt Gray took charge of the delivery. He donned gloves and successfully delivered Cleo. He then untangled the umbilical cord from around her neck and cleared her airways.

“After the midwife left a second time, I realized we were going to have to deliver the baby ourselves,” Matt Gray explained. “I put on gloves and a few minutes later the baby was born. Once I got out, I saw the cord was wrapped around her neck. I managed to untangle it, but couldn’t get the mucus out. I cleaned her, dried her and gave her to Jo. It’s terrifying. Everything could have gone wrong.”

Hospital Apology and Investigation

The Oxford University Hospitals Trust (OUH) has apologized to the Gray family and launched an investigation into the incident. The couple has filed a formal complaint regarding the midwife’s conduct and the lack of support during the delivery.

This incident echoes a similar case reported in the Daily Mail in March 2026, where a father delivered his baby daughter after a midwife panicked and left the room.
