Uncertain Spring: Norway Faces Potential Return to Winter
Harstad, Norway, is experiencing unusually mild temperatures for early March, but a shift in weather patterns could bring a return to winter conditions, according to meteorologist Marit Berger Røsland.
Mild Temperatures and Current Conditions
The first week of March in Harstad has been four degrees Celsius warmer than normal, with the coldest temperature recorded at -0.1 degrees Celsius. This warmth is attributed to low-pressure systems moving along the Norwegian Sea, drawing milder air northward. For the next few days, temperatures are expected to remain above freezing with precipitation falling as rain.
A Temporary Shift Towards Colder Weather
While temperatures will dip slightly on Tuesday, the snow line is predicted to descend to between 400 and 600 meters above sea level by Wednesday. Despite this, the lowlands are unlikely to spot significant snowfall.
Potential for a Late Winter Return
Towards the end of the week, a potential shift in wind direction could bring cooler temperatures. Berger notes that an offshore wind could limit precipitation, but doesn’t rule out the possibility of snow. “If the wind comes from the north-west, the snow showers can quickly come in,” she stated. “So it is not completely impossible.”
Snow for Easter?
When questioned about the possibility of winter’s return, Berger advised caution. “There’s a lot that can happen, so I wouldn’t pack away my winter clothes and switch to summer tires just yet. I think there are some good chances of snow and cold spells.” She described the current spring weather as “a bit gray and boring,” with limited sunshine and precipitation.
Spring’s Arrival and Easter Forecast
According to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, spring officially begins when the average temperature consistently approaches and rises above zero degrees. In Harstad, this typically occurs around March 26th. The 21-day forecast currently extends only to the Monday after Palm Sunday, predicting temperatures above freezing with a 50 percent chance of precipitation. The days leading up to Palm Sunday are expected to remain mild, but Berger emphasizes that a few days of north-westerly winds and snow showers could quickly build up snow reserves.
No danger warnings have been issued for the Harstad area due to the current weather conditions.
