Indonesia’s government has officially resolved the dispute over the leadership of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) by confirming Jusuf Kalla as the incumbent chairman. Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas announced the decision on Friday, upholding Kalla’s position over challenger Agung Laksono.
Kalla Retains PMI Leadership
Kalla, a former vice president, has held the PMI’s top spot since 2009. During the organization’s national meeting earlier this month, he emerged as the sole candidate for the leadership race. Agung Laksono, who is not a Red Cross member, attempted to challenge Kalla’s reelection bid. However, Agung’s candidacy was annulled as he failed to secure the minimum 20 percent threshold of PMI member support required on the first day of the meeting.
Kalla subsequently secured reelection by acclamation, garnering majority support from regional offices’ executives.
The government’s decision follows a thorough review of requests from both Kalla and Agung’s parties, seeking recognition for their respective claims to the PMI chairmanship.
