Minot State Wrestling Program Enters Fresh Era with Coaching Change

MINOT, N.D. – After 11 seasons, Evan Forde’s tenure as head coach of the Minot State University men’s wrestling team has concluded. The decision, announced on Monday by Kevin Harmon, Minot State’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics, marks a new direction for the program.

Forde’s Legacy at Minot State

Forde took the helm of the Beaver wrestling program prior to the 2015-16 season, becoming the second head coach since the program’s reinstatement in 2010 after a 20-year hiatus. During his eleven years, the team achieved a dual record of 46 wins. He guided eight individual wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships, and three earned NCAA All-American honors: Jake Swirple (2021-22 & 2024-25) and Mitchell Eull (2017-18).

Recent Performance and Program Outlook

The 2023-24 season saw the Beavers finish with a 5-13 dual record, including a 1-9 mark in NSIC action. At the NCAA Super Region V Tournament, Cole Faircloth placed 5th at 133 pounds, and Gavin Turk finished 6th at 174 pounds. Harmon expressed gratitude for Forde’s dedication and commitment to the student-athletes and the wrestling program.

Administrative Changes and Background

The announcement follows a period of administrative transition within the Minot State athletic department. In March 2024, the university eliminated the athletic director position, expanding the role of Kevin Harmon, previously Vice President of Student Affairs, to oversee Intercollegiate Athletics. Minot Daily News reported on this restructuring.

Search for New Leadership

The search for Forde’s replacement is currently underway. Harmon stated the university is seeking a new leader to guide the wrestling program forward. Kevin Forde was hired in July 2022 following interviews with four finalists, succeeding Andy Carter, who departed in April 2022. Minot State University announced Forde’s initial appointment.
