Dutch Farmers Protest with Tractors in several Cities
Table of Contents
Farmers are protesting in several Dutch cities today, driving their tractors into city centers. The protests are a response to the government’s nitrogen policy, which farmers say threatens their livelihoods.
The protests are taking place in cities including The Hague, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. In The hague, farmers have parked their tractors near the parliament building.
The government’s nitrogen policy aims to reduce nitrogen emissions, which are harmful to the environment. The policy requires farmers to reduce their livestock numbers or invest in new technologies to reduce emissions. Farmers argue that the policy is unfair and will force many of them out of business.
The protests are expected to cause traffic disruptions in the affected cities. Police are on the scene to maintain order.
AI in Healthcare: Promise and peril
Van Genderen and his colleagues advise the World Health association (WHO) in the field of AI in healthcare. “Embracing AI in healthcare goes wrong if there are no moral rules. It must be safe and ethical.”
Interpret
The newly developed tool assesses the probability of developing diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and many others. Researchers claim the system can predict up to a thousand diseases, which they believe is vital for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Professor Mark Hoogendoorn of VU Amsterdam also builds AI models that predict diseases, such as the chance of colon cancer. He is excited but also critical. “For some diseases it is doing pretty well, but not for others at all.”
How can these predictions be reliably interpreted? Van Genderen questions. “How can you guarantee that it works just as well for a man of 70 as for a woman of 70, or someone from a minority group, or someone of 20? What happens if you enter someone’s skin color or sexual preference? You really have to understand what those data sets do.”
“It’s not about being able to do something with a model, but how we deal with it.”
– Michel van Genderen, Arts and AI advisor in healthcare
Van Genderen warns that there is still a long way to go before doctors can work with AI models. “What we absolutely cannot afford is that we make decisions based on an AI model and that the patient still falls dead. Because something has been interpreted wrong.”
The internist-intesivist suggests we are rushing into AI implementation. “that is not possible. It’s about human lives. It’s not about being able to do something with a model, but how we deal with it.”
