Mother of Three Found Alive After 24 Years, Family Shocked
A North Carolina mother of three, Michele Lyn Hundley Smith, who disappeared in December 2001, has been found alive and well after 24 years, leaving her family stunned. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office reported that Smith, then 38, vanished after leaving her home in Eden to go Christmas shopping at a Kmart in Virginia.
Smith’s disappearance prompted extensive searches by multiple agencies in North Carolina and Virginia, including the FBI, who dedicated “countless” hours to the investigation and pursued numerous leads.
Discovery and Family Reaction
On Friday, officers located Smith “alive and well” in an undisclosed location in North Carolina after receiving a tip. Authorities are not revealing her current whereabouts but have informed her family.
“It makes me want to go out and scream: she’s alive, she’s alive,” Smith’s cousin, Barbara Byrd, told WFMYNews 2. “My biggest question is… what happened all those years ago in December? What made you want to leave? What happened?”
Byrd expressed a long-held belief in Smith’s survival, stating, “I never thought that Michele was dead. I knew she was alive. It’s just a feeling I’ve had my whole life.”
Son’s Emotional Response
In a Facebook post, one of Smith’s sons shared his complex emotions, describing the past two days as “a whirlwind of emotions.” He expressed a mix of elation, anger, heartbreak and confusion.
“Will I have a relationship with my mother again? I honestly can’t answer because I don’t even know,” he wrote. “My first reaction would be yes, absolutely, but then I think about all the pain… But even so, my mother is only human, just like we all are.” He fondly remembered the love and bond they shared during his childhood, recalling “smiles we shared, the happy moments spent together and the love I felt.”
The reason for Smith’s disappearance remains undisclosed.
