Rémi Gaillard’s Mayoral Campaign Hit by Electoral Propaganda Ban in Montpellier
Montpellier, France – The electoral commission in Montpellier has invalidated the campaign materials of mayoral candidate Rémi Gaillard, preventing the distribution of his platform to voters. The decision, announced on Friday, March 6, 2026, stems from concerns over the colors used in his campaign literature, which the commission believes too closely resemble the French flag.
Color Controversy and Electoral Rules
According to the commission, the use of “blue-beige-red” juxtaposed colors in Gaillard’s campaign materials could cause confusion with the French tricolor flag, a violation of Article R27 of the electoral code. This article prohibits the use of the national emblem and similar color combinations in campaign materials.
Gaillard, however, disputes this assessment, stating that the beige color is distinct from white and does not create a resemblance to the French flag. He has filed an appeal against the commission’s decision.
Political Accusations
Gaillard alleges that the complaint leading to the invalidation was filed by the campaign of incumbent Mayor Michaël Delafosse, representing the Socialist Party (PS). He accused Delafosse’s team of attempting to suppress his campaign by preventing voters from accessing his platform. Delafosse’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment.
What’s at Stake
If the commission’s decision is upheld, Gaillard will be the only candidate whose campaign platform will not be distributed to households in Montpellier. His voting slips, however, have been approved and will be available at polling stations.
