Tesla has been renewed by Model Y with Performance version – more power, larger range, more sporty design and greater everyday comfort. Is this the real refreshment of Tesla?

Tesla Model Y in Latvia has already become a kind of “SUV benchmark”. It can be seen along the streets of Riga and at the Valka border. And now – on stage appears the new Model Y Performance version which promises not only greater power and more athletic behavior,but also more comfort in everyday trips.

While the new Model Y Performance will only differ from the usual Model Y with an inconspicuous sticker, slightly different lamps and more aggressive bumpers, the biggest changes are actually under the metal. Tesla has introduced a new front and rear facade, which, along with a carbon fiber wing, not only makes the car visually athletic, but also improves aerodynamics by reducing air resistance and increasing stability at higher speeds. The wheels and tires have also been modified, using narrower but wider tires in front. As Tesla says, the result is better handling and more accurate grip.

though, the biggest novelty, from my personal perspective, is the batteries. The new Model Y Performance, by all signals, uses TeslaS own designed 4680 cells – cylindrical batteries with 46 mm diameter and 80 mm high. They are five times more spacious than 2170 cells, which allows you to reduce the number of elements needed and improve overall energy efficiency. As an inevitable result, this Model Y promises not only more power, but also up to 5-7% more mileage. This may seem like a small number, but it translates to tens of extra kilometers in everyday use.It should be noted, however, that these 4,680 batteries are currently mostly manufactured in the US – Tesla factories in Fremont, Nevada and Texas. Plans to start production at the Giga Berlin plant have also been delayed. Officially, Tesla points to bureaucratic and cost problems in Europe, so at least in the near future european buyers will receive Model Y with imported batteries, not locally manufactured. This raises an interesting question – the US is not currently offered the Model Y Performance, but the batteries for this model are manufactured in the US and sent to Europe…
