Rams’ Wild-Card Game Relocated Due to Devastating Wildfires in Los Angeles

The NFL has made the difficult decision to relocate the Los Angeles Rams’ wild-card playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings from SoFi Stadium to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The move comes in the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged the Los Angeles area throughout the week.

Safety First: NFL Prioritizes Public Well-being

The league announced the relocation on Thursday, citing “the interest of public safety” as the primary reason. Multiple wildfires, fueled by strong winds, have scorched thousands of acres and destroyed over 10,000 structures. While none of the fires were directly threatening SoFi Stadium, concerns about air quality, strained emergency resources, and the overall impact on the community prompted the relocation.

“We would like to be able to play the game at home in front of our fans,” said Rams coach Sean McVay. “That’s the way that we’re operating, but I can’t control when that decision will be made. … If it’s not in LA, then the game will still be played, and we’ve got to be able to get ready for that.”

Rams and Chargers Adapt to Challenging Conditions

Both the Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, who will play their wild-card game in Houston on Saturday, practiced outdoors this week despite the smoky conditions. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh even cut his players’ outdoor practice time in half due to air quality concerns.

The Rams will travel to Phoenix on Friday and practice at the Cardinals’ complex in Tempe on Saturday. The team confirmed that no players or coaches have been directly affected by the fires, although some personnel have experienced power outages.

“We’ve lost power where I am for a couple of days. We’ve been lucky in that regard, that (loss of) power is the worst thing that’s happened to us. Obviously it’s a tough thing to watch on the news, to be around, to see. Driving around, seeing all that, it’s just really sad to see what’s going on. A bunch of people (are) doing everything they possibly can to try and get things under control and get people back to normal as quickly as possible,” said Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Rare Relocation, But Not Unprecedented

While game relocations are rare in the NFL, this isn’t the first time the league has taken such action due to wildfires. In 2003, a Monday night game between the Chargers and Dolphins was moved from San Diego to Tempe, Arizona, to avoid wildfires in Southern California. The Rams also had a Monday night game against Kansas City relocated from Mexico City to Los Angeles in 2018 due to concerns about the playing surface.

The Rams and Vikings will now face off in Arizona, where the focus will be on football and supporting the communities affected by the devastating wildfires.

Stay tuned for updates on the game and the ongoing wildfire situation in Los Angeles.
