Norovirus Outbreak on MS Westerdam Cruise Ship Prompts Hong Kong Health Response

Hong Kong health authorities activated epidemiological surveillance protocols following a norovirus outbreak detected on board the cruise ship MS Westerdam, which docked at the Kai Tak terminal on Sunday, March 1, 2026, with 76 confirmed cases of acute gastroenteritis.

Outbreak Details and Initial Response

The operation commenced at 04:00 local time (20:00 GMT on Saturday, February 28, 2026), when Port Health inspectors boarded the ship after receiving a prior alert from the operator. As of March 1, 2026, the outbreak has affected 65 passengers and 11 crew members, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and fever appearing since February 15, 2026, during a route through Japan, South Korea, and mainland China.

Health Screening and Disinfection Procedures

In accordance with World Health Organization regulations, a temporary medical station was established on the pier for the triage of nearly 2,000 travelers. Following disembarkation, the shipping company conducted a “deep cleaning” and chemical disinfection of common areas, adhering to the guidelines of the Vessel Sanitation Program, a global standard for pathogen control on cruise ships.

Laboratory Confirmation and Current Status

Laboratory tests on seven stool samples confirmed the presence of norovirus. Edwin Tsui, controller of the Center for Health Protection (CHP), stated that the situation remains “stable” and that only three individuals exhibited mild symptoms upon arrival, not requiring hospitalization. Hong Kong authorities have similarly reinforced training for cleaning staff in biological fluid containment techniques to prevent environmental spread.

Regional Virus Activity and Future Itinerary

Tsui cautioned that virus activity is currently elevated in East Asia, particularly in Japan and South Korea. After receiving clearance from hygiene inspectors, the MS Westerdam was authorized to continue its itinerary, setting sail for the Philippines, with authorities there notified to maintain health surveillance during the ship’s passage.
