Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine Inducts New Members into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine recently welcomed 42 new members into its chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society. The induction ceremony, held on March 13, recognized outstanding achievements in medical education and contributions to the field of medicine.

AOA: A Century-Old Tradition of Excellence

Founded in 1902, Alpha Omega Alpha is a prestigious honor society that recognizes exceptional merit in medical scholarship, professionalism, and service. Northwestern’s chapter continues a long tradition of honoring those who demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of medical practice.

Keynote Address Highlights Advancements in Transplantation Science

The ceremony featured a keynote lecture by Satish Nadig, MD, PhD, the Edward G. Elcock Professor of Surgical Research and director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Feinberg. Dr. Nadig discussed the evolution of transplantation science and current efforts to address chronic rejection – a major challenge in organ transplantation.

Dr. Nadig highlighted the potential of novel organ preservation interventions, including Targeted Rapamycin Micelles (TRaM) nanoparticles, which he developed. TRaM targets endothelial cells and downregulates immune responses, potentially prolonging allograft longevity. He envisions a future where organs can be tailored to individual patients through genetic editing, nanotherapy, or immunometabolic therapy.

Recognizing Future Leaders in Medicine

Joshua Goldstein, MD, senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, and professor of Pediatrics, announced the new house staff inductees. Marianne Green, MD, vice dean for Education and the Raymond H. Curry, MD, Professor of Medical Education, welcomed the faculty inductees.

Newly inducted medical students shared their perspectives on the significance of AOA membership:

  • Flynn Chen, a fourth-year medical student, emphasized that AOA membership reflects “academic dedication, but likewise my commitment to leadership, service, professionalism and patient care.”
  • Jethel Hernandez, also a fourth-year medical student, stated that induction “celebrates the values that have guided my journey in medicine — showing up for patients and communities with integrity and compassion, leading through service, and investing in mentorship.”
  • Harris Avgousti, a fourth-year medical student, expressed gratitude for the support of mentors and affirmed his commitment to “patients and scholarship” and “pushing the boundaries of academic medicine.”

AOA at Northwestern: Continuing a Legacy

This year marks the 122nd class inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The AOA honor society continues to recognize and support the next generation of medical leaders dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education.
