Alex Johnston Breaks NRL Try-Scoring Record Amid Fan Celebrations

South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston has etched his name into National Rugby League (NRL) history, surpassing Ken Irvine’s longstanding try-scoring record. The historic moment occurred during the Rabbitohs’ 26-18 loss to the Sydney Roosters on Friday night, sparking a pitch invasion at Allianz Stadium despite warnings of hefty fines and potential bans.

Record-Breaking Performance

Johnston entered the match needing a double to surpass Irvine’s record of 212 tries, set in 1973. He scored his first try in the 32nd minute to equal the record, and then broke it with his second try in the very first minute of the second half, bringing his career total to 213 tries . The winger was lifted by supporters after scoring the record-breaking try.

Fan Reaction and Arrests

Thousands of fans stormed the field following Johnston’s record-breaking try, ignoring warnings of potential $5,500 fines and two-year stadium bans . Despite the warnings from South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett, captain Cameron Murray, and other teammates, fans rushed the field to celebrate with Johnston.

Police confirmed that two fans were arrested in connection with the pitch invasion. A 39-year-old man was arrested for common assault and entering the field of play after allegedly assaulting a security guard . A 45-year-old man was also charged with entering the field of play after attempting to rush the field prior to the mass invasion . Both men have been issued banning notices and will appear in court at a later date.

Fines and Resumption of Play

Despite initial threats of fines, Venues NSW is unlikely to issue penalties to the majority of fans who invaded the pitch, given the large number involved and their largely passive behavior . The initial pitch invader may face a fine, but Venues NSW is considering waiving it as well.

Play resumed approximately 15 minutes after Johnston’s record-breaking try. This was significantly faster than the resumption of play following a similar pitch invasion during an AFL game in 2022, which took over half an hour .

Prime Minister Among Celebrators

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, a known Souths fan, was also present at Allianz Stadium and joined the celebrations on the field , .
