NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Criticism for Response to Iran Attack and NYPD Policies

Recent York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing mounting criticism for his response to the recent U.S. Attack against Iran, as well as his policies regarding the New York Police Department (NYPD). His statements following the operation, described as taking Iran’s side against the U.S., have drawn condemnation from Iranian-Americans and sparked concerns about public safety.

Controversial Statement on Iran Attack

Following Operation Epic Fury, Mayor Mamdani posted on social media that “Americans do not want” what he characterized as an “illegal war of aggression.” This statement drew immediate backlash, particularly from Iranians in New York who were celebrating the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad criticized Mamdani, stating she does not feel safe in New York listening to someone who sympathizes with a regime she says killed more than 30,000 Iranians.

Concerns Over NYPD Funding and Support

Critics also point to Mamdani’s policies regarding the NYPD, alleging he is defunding and demoralizing the police force. He recently cut $22 million from the NYPD budget and canceled the hiring of 5,000 additional officers that were previously planned. Despite these cuts, Mamdani reportedly maintains a 60-officer NYPD detail for his personal protection, costing taxpayers millions annually.

Incidents Highlighting Tensions

Two recent incidents have further fueled criticism. After an NYPD officer shot and injured a man wielding a kitchen knife, Mamdani visited the suspect in the hospital, requested his handcuffs be removed, and opposed assault charges. He did not visit the officers involved in the incident. Mamdani dismissed an attack on police officers at Washington Square Park as “kids having a snowball fight,” despite two officers being injured. The suspect arrested in that case initially faced felony charges, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg downgraded the charge to a misdemeanor and released him.

Warning of Potential Terrorist Threats

Former FBI Deputy Director Chris Swecker has warned of the risk of Iranian terrorist “sleeper cells” and “lone wolf” radicals in the wake of the attack on Iran. Adding to these concerns, a Senegalese immigrant, reportedly wearing an “property of Allah” hoodie and an Iranian flag undershirt, allegedly opened fire at a bar in Austin, Texas, killing two people and wounding at least 14 others. The FBI is investigating a potential terrorism connection and the suspect’s ties to New York City.

Calls for a Change in Approach

A retired NYPD sergeant with 21 years of service expressed concern that Mamdani’s policies could lead to a more serious incident, stating, “The attitude of this mayor must change.”

Criticism of Political Rhetoric

The article also criticizes the use of the acronym “TACO” (Trump Always Chickens Out) by political opponents of former President Trump, arguing that Trump has demonstrated resolve in addressing authoritarian regimes.

Albany’s Reparations Inquiry

Finally, the article criticizes a $10 million inquiry into reparations for descendants of slaves in New York State, calling it a waste of taxpayer money.
