Whooping Cough Outbreak at Oak Hills High School: Parents Urged to Take Precautions
Parents of students at Oak Hills High School are being asked to stay vigilant and monitor their children for symptoms of whooping cough (Pertussis) after a confirmed case was reported at the school.
In a letter sent to parents on Wednesday, the Oak Hills Local Schools District emphasized the importance of early detection and isolation to prevent further spread. The district requested that parents keep sick children home from school and observe them for symptoms through November 16th.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause a variety of symptoms.
Symptoms of Whooping Cough:**
- Runny nose
- Congestion
- Mild coughing
- Labored breathing
While symptoms initially appear mild, they often worsen after one to two weeks, leading to severe coughing fits that can interfere with breathing. It’s crucial to note that individuals diagnosed with whooping cough remain contagious for five days even after starting antibiotic treatment.
The school district is working closely with health officials to mitigate the situation and ensure the well-being of all students and staff. Parents are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider if they have concerns about their child’s health or if they suspect whooping cough.
If you believe your child may have whooping cough, please seek medical attention immediately to prevent further spread and ensure proper treatment.
