Imam Advocates for Organ and Blood Donation, Citing Islamic Teachings
Trélazé, France – Imam Issa Hamidou Mahamoud of the Trélazé mosque, near Angers, has actively promoted organ and blood donation within his community, emphasizing the Islamic permissibility and moral importance of saving lives. A recent round table discussion at the mosque brought together healthcare professionals, donation associations, and members of the public to address questions and dispel misinformation surrounding these life-saving procedures.
Islamic Perspective on Donation
Imam Mahamoud referenced the Quran, stating that “he who saves one life, saves all humanity.” He underscored that the urgency of saving a life fully justifies organ donation and addressed concerns about inaccurate information circulating online. He explicitly stated that the Muslim faith authorizes blood and organ donation without hesitation, and that refusing such donations when they could save lives is considered a fault before God. Ouest-France reported on his views in February 2023.
Addressing Concerns and Sharing Testimonials
The round table featured presentations from representatives of Angers University Hospital, blood donation association Sang et vie Trélazé, and organ donation association Adot 49. Rémy Léridon, president of Adot 49, shared a personal and moving testimony about how organ donation saved the lives of seven people after his wife’s passing. A mother also shared her experience of her child receiving a life-saving liver transplant, with the child now thriving at 20 years vintage.
National Statistics and Reassurance
Aurore Armand, a doctor at the University Hospital, reassured attendees that bodies are returned to families in perfect condition, consistent with post-surgical procedures, and that donation does not impede ritual washing or religious rites. Statistics presented highlighted the critical need for donations: in 2025, 22,585 patients were on the national waiting list, and tragically, 852 died due to a lack of available organs.
Encouraging Participation
Éric Cochet, president of Sang et vie Trélazé, encouraged community members to participate in the four annual blood drives organized in Trélazé. Imam Mahamoud also used his Friday sermons to focus on the importance of organ donation, further reinforcing the message within the local Muslim community.
