Arson Suspected in Oslo Apartment Fire, 12 Hospitalized

Oslo, Norway – A fire in an apartment building in the Rødtvet neighborhood of Oslo on Saturday evening is being investigated as a potential act of arson, according to police. The incident sent 12 people to the hospital for examination, and has left residents shaken.

Fire Breaks Out, Pram Found ‘Obviously Rigged’

Emergency services responded to the fire on the fifth floor of the building late Saturday evening. Firefighters quickly gained control of the blaze, but the hallway and several apartments were filled with smoke.

Police discovered a pram in the common area/stairway that was described as “obviously rigged,” leading investigators to suspect arson. Pernille Fleischer, head of crime in the Oslo police district, stated that while they cannot say with 100 percent certainty that the fire was arson, observations and information gathered suggest it was. Forensic investigations are underway to determine the cause.

Residents Describe Shock and Fear

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told VG that she and her family were still in shock. “We saw flames when we opened the door,” she said. The family has lived in the building for six years and had never experienced anything similar.

Edvin Hammervold, chairman of the housing association, expressed his dismay. “If someone has set fire to a pram, it is completely tragic,” he stated. He noted that the building dates back to 1962 and has never had a fire before.

Apartments Closed Off, No Arrests Made

Several apartments have been closed off while investigations continue. Hammervold indicated that the apartments themselves did not sustain internal damage, but the corridor was severely burned. It is currently unclear when residents will be allowed to return to their homes.

As of Monday, no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the fire.

Ongoing Investigation

The Oslo police are continuing their investigation, with forensic analysis expected to be completed later this week. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
