Iditarod 2026: Race Begins in Anchorage Amidst Snowy Conditions

The 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race commenced on Saturday, March 7th, with a ceremonial start in Anchorage, Alaska. Thirty-seven teams embarked on an 11-mile run through the city streets and trails, cheered on by thousands of spectators. The race began amidst a significant snowfall, a welcome change from the snow scarcity that shortened the 2025 event.

The official start of the race is scheduled for Sunday, March 8th, in Willow, Alaska.

Ceremonial Start Highlights

The Anchorage ceremonial start provided a festive kickoff to the Iditarod, with mushers and their canine teams navigating the city’s winter landscape. Notable participants included four-time Iditarod champion Jeff King, and rookie musher Jody Potts-Joseph, whose daughter Quannah Chasinghorse was in attendance to support her. Mushers Bailey Vitello and Travis Beals also participated in the Anchorage start.

Willow Restart on Sunday

The true competition begins on Sunday in Willow, approximately 90 minutes north of Anchorage. Mushers will depart Willow Lake at two-minute intervals starting at 2 p.m., with thousands of fans expected to attend. The Willow Community Center will host vendors offering food and souvenirs. For those unable to attend in person, the restart will be broadcast live on the Iditarod website.

2026 Race Route Adjustments

This year’s race features some changes to the traditional route. The ceremonial start in Anchorage was not held this year. The restart location has been moved to Deshka Landing, five miles from the usual Willow Community Center location. Spectators will not be admitted to the Deshka Landing restart. Yentna and Takonta will not be official checkpoints, though the trail will pass through those areas. The race will include a loop around Flat and back to Iditarod.

A detailed race map is available on the Iditarod website.
