The timeline of GLP-1 medications in India
On September 26, Novo Nordisk received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to sell Ozempic (Semaglutide) in India. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) received approval from the Indian drug regulator earlier this year,in june.
Novo Nordisk launched Wegovy in June 2025 for chronic weight management in adults who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. Wegovy’s main ingredient is semaglutide.
Victoza, which contains liraglutide, has been available in India since January 2024.
How similar and different are Ozempic and Mounjaro
Both are weekly injectable medications that control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes and aid weight loss in obese individuals, according to the US FDA. Both GLP-1 medications can also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Mounjaro is unique because it works on two hormone pathways – GIP and GLP-1 – to regulate blood sugar and appetite. Ozempic, conversely, targets only the GLP-1 pathway.
