# Suspect Arrested in Connection with Los Angeles’s Palisades Fire
Nine months after teh devastating fires in Pacific palisades and Malibu, California, police have arrested a suspect. While the Eaton fire in altadena was attributed to an electrical tower issue, the Palisades fire appears to have been intentionally set.
The detainee is Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Uber driver from Melbourne, Florida, who previously resided in Pacific palisades. He intentionally ignited a road in the Santa Monica Mountains on January 1, 2025. city Attorney Bill Essayli stated,”The recklessness of a single person caused one of the worst fires that Los Angeles has ever suffered.”
Authorities revealed during a press conference that Rinderknecht was working on New Year’s eve and dropped off a passenger in the area. Passengers reported he appeared agitated and angry. He then drove to Skull rock, a hiking trail north of Pacific Palisades in an area called The Summit, parking around 11:38 p.m. and calling a friend.
The driver proceeded up the trail while repeatedly listening to videos of a rapper discussing arson – the song was played nine times in the four days prior. Investigators discovered an image generated by ChatGPT on his devices depicting a city engulfed in flames.
Rinderknecht then attempted to set himself on fire, using a lighter to ignite papers and vegetation. Fires are strictly prohibited in the area, even including a ban on smoking. He also queried the AI service, asking: “Are you to blame if there is a fire as of your cigarettes?”
