Paul Mainieri Out as South Carolina Baseball Coach

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Paul Mainieri has been relieved of his duties as South Carolina’s baseball coach midway through his second season, failing to replicate the success he achieved at LSU. The move comes as the Gamecocks struggle to regain their footing in the Southeastern Conference.

A Disappointing Tenure in Columbia

Mainieri, 68, who led LSU to a College World Series championship in 2009, had been away from coaching for three years before accepting the position at South Carolina in 2024. His overall record with the Gamecocks was 40-40. The team’s recent performance, including a 22-6 loss to Arkansas on Friday and a subsequent 3-2 defeat in 10 innings on Saturday with Monte Lee serving as interim head coach, contributed to the decision.

Joint Decision and Responsibility

“Jeremiah Donati and I have agreed that the baseball program will be better served with new leadership,” Mainieri said in a statement released by the university. The New York Times reported that Mainieri took full responsibility for the team’s win-loss record during his tenure.

Mainieri expressed his initial goal was to restore the South Carolina program to prominence, aiming for a return to the College World Series in Omaha. Although, he acknowledged that achieving this goal would require more time than he had anticipated, and that he did not have the time to see it through at his age. “I did not get the job done at a level that I expected, or the university deserves,” he stated.

Career Overview and Legacy

Throughout his 39-year head coaching career, Mainieri amassed a record of 1,545-817-8. According to his Wikipedia page, his coaching stops included St. Thomas (1983-1988), Air Force (1989-1994), Notre Dame (1995-2006), LSU (2007-2021), and South Carolina (2024-2026).

Prior to South Carolina, Mainieri achieved significant success at LSU, winning the 2009 College World Series and earning multiple SEC championships (2009, 2012, 2015, 2017) and SEC tournament titles (2008-2010, 2013, 2014, 2017). He was named NCBWA National Coach of the Year in 2015 and Baseball America Coach of the Year in 2009.

Looking Ahead

Monte Lee, previously a hitting coach on Mainieri’s staff, will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. NOLA.com notes that Lee previously served as the head coach at Clemson (2016-2022) and the College of Charleston (2009-2015). South Carolina will now begin the search for a new leader to revitalize its baseball program.
