Urgent Warning: Monarch Raw Pet Food Linked to Bird Flu in Cats
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a critical warning to pet owners, advising against feeding their pets Monarch Raw Pet Food sold at several farmers markets in California. The warning comes after the detection of the H5 bird flu virus in product samples and the confirmation of a house cat consuming Monarch Raw Pet Food testing positive for H5 bird flu.
Four other cats from the same household are also presumed to have contracted H5 bird flu after consuming the same product. Residents who fed their pets Monarch raw pet food products or other raw meat or dairy products and notice any concerning symptoms should immediately contact their veterinarian.
Silence from Regulatory Agencies Raises Concerns
A concerning silence from both the FDA and USDA has further fueled anxiety among pet owners. While the FDA has jurisdiction over pet food and should be issuing recall notices and alerts, their Center for Veterinary Medicine has yet to publish any information regarding Monarch Raw Pet Food or Northwest Naturals, another brand recently linked to H5 bird flu contamination.
Similarly, the USDA, responsible for overseeing meat recalls and poultry depopulation, has remained silent on these reports. This lack of transparency leaves pet owners in a vulnerable position, unable to make informed decisions about their pets’ safety.
Call to Action: Demand Transparency
Pet owners are urged to contact the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine and demand immediate action. Email them at AskCVM@fda.hhs.gov to urge them to update the public promptly.
The safety of our beloved pets is paramount. We must hold regulatory agencies accountable and demand transparency in handling these potentially dangerous situations.
