PhilSA Empowers Filipinos with Data from Space: Unveiling Training Course on Downstream Data Utilization

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is taking giant strides in utilizing space technology for the benefit of the Filipino people. In a significant milestone, PhilSA successfully completed the pilot implementation of its Training Course on Downstream Data Utilization for educators, researchers, and professionals in the space science and technology application (SSTA) fields.

Bridging the Gap Between Space and Society

Held from November 25 to 29, 2024, in Quezon City, the training program catered to 30 participants from diverse backgrounds, including academe, government agencies, and the private sector. The initiative aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to harness the power of satellite data for real-world applications.

Unlocking the Potential of Remote Sensing and GIS

The training delved into the fundamentals of remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), covering crucial aspects like platforms and sensor systems, digital image processing, mapping and projection systems, spatial data models and analysis, and map accuracy assessment and validation. The five-day program, facilitated by PhilSA researchers and specialists, also emphasized the practicalities of field data collection techniques alongside real-world applications of RS and GIS.

Hands-on Experience: Transforming Data into Action

Participantsengaged in practical exercises utilizing cutting-edge tools such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), Google Earth Pro, and Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS). These exercises included Image Pre-Processing; Interpretation, Transformation; Image Classification; Flood Mapping; and Forest Monitoring.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Data-Driven Decisions

The training culminated in the creation of a flood susceptibility map for Central Luzon and the development of an action plan that encompassed the training topics. This plan addressed pressing societal issues, including air quality, environmental monitoring, disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), and other challenges faced by local government units (LGUs) or organizations. Participants also highlighted the vital role of satellite data and remotely sensed products in empowering informed decision-making and driving data-driven policy formulation.

Expanding Access to Space Technology

The pilot program witnessed an overwhelming response with over 300 applications from across the Philippines. PhilSA is actively planning to scale up its implementation in the coming years, opening doors to more participants from various regions and offering additional training courses to further empower Filipinos in the field of space science and technology.
