Work, Live, and Vibe: Barry’s Field Aims to Reimagine Douglas

A buzz of activity is brewing in Douglas, a charming suburb nestled on the outskirts of Cork City. At the heart of it all is Barry’s Field, a proposed residential development that promises to inject vibrant new life into the area.

Driven by Barry’s Field Ltd., the project envisions transforming a currently vacant plot on Carrigaline Road and Churchyard Lane into a bustling mixed-use space. This exciting proposition includes 124 apartments, ranging from cozy one-bedrooms to spacious three-bedrooms, catering to a diverse range of residents. But beyond the promise of contemporary living spaces, Barry’s Field is venturing into uncharted territory with a unique concept: the "Work Café".

“We’re creating more than just a place to live, we’re building a community hub,” explains Fiona Byrne, Project Manager at Barry’s Field Ltd. “The ‘Work Café’ is the cornerstone of this vision. Imagine a space that blends the warmth of a local coffee shop with the functionality of a coworking space.”

Byrne envisions a space where residents, remote workers, and entrepreneurs can seamlessly blend work and leisure. Comfortable workspaces, reliable Wi-Fi connectivity, a stimulating atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee are all part of the design.

However, the project hasn’t been without its critics. The emphasis on one-bedroom apartments, while potentially appealing to a growing segment of the population – Cork is experiencing an aging population and smaller household sizes – has sparked debate about its alignment with Cork City’s Development Plan, which advocates for a wider range of housing options to accommodate diverse demographic needs.

"We understand the concerns," acknowledges Byrne. "But we believe our proposed mix reflects the reality of Cork’s evolving housing landscape. The demand for smaller accommodation is on the rise."

Barry’s Field’s project stands as a testament to the evolving trends shaping urban living. It seeks to address modern needs – flexible workspaces, connected communities – all while navigating the complexities of housing provision in a rapidly changing city. The outcome of Cork City Council’s evaluation, pending a decision by March 25th, will undoubtedly have a ripple effect, shaping the future of Douglas and inspiring further innovative approaches to urban development in Cork. This is a project that demands attention, prompting us to ask: what does the future of community living look like, and how can we build spaces that truly serve the needs of its residents?
