Early Gaffes Cast Shadow on Indonesian President Prabowo’s Governance

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s administration is facing scrutiny just weeks into his presidency, with several high-profile gaffes by appointed officials raising questions about his leadership. Analysts are divided over the long-term impact of these incidents but acknowledge they present an early challenge for the fledgling government.

A Series of Missteps

One such incident involved Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman, Presidential Special Envoy for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development, who resigned following public outrage after mocking an iced tea seller at a public prayer event. His derogatory remarks, captured on social media, sparked widespread condemnation, with political figures and even Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim joining the chorus of criticism.

Another controversy erupted when Villages and Regional Development Minister Yandri Susanto used his ministry’s letterhead to invite local leaders to commemorate his mother’s death anniversary. He attributed the lapse in judgment to inexperience, but the incident nonetheless drew criticism.

Concerns Over Cabinet Processes

Some observers, like Dr Irman G. Lanti from Padjadjaran University, question the vetting processes involved in forming the Cabinet, suggesting a lack of thoroughness in evaluating appointees’ personalities and qualifications. They argue this has resulted in a diverse Cabinet, bringing with it various challenges in achieving cohesion and alignment with the President’s vision.

Room for Growth and Reshuffles?

However, others, such as Made Supriatma, a visiting fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, take a more lenient view, attributing the missteps to the inexperience of new politicians navigating their roles. While acknowledging the need for improvement, Supriatma points to the Cabinet’s continued functioning despite Prabowo’s extensive diplomatic tour as a sign of resilience.

Dr Irman suggests that Presidential intervention might be necessary. He believes Prabowo may need to consider reshuffling the Cabinet to ensure competency and effectiveness, particularly if a desired **“quick win”** policy emerges to solidify his administration’s early successes.

A Focus on ‘Quick Wins’ and Wider Challenges

Made Supriatma highlights the importance of early policy achievements for solidifying public support. While Prabowo’s free lunch plan, intended to address malnutrition, has garnered attention, concrete implementation remains pending. The President faces the challenge of translating the plan into tangible outcomes and achieving a clear “quick win” within his first 100 days.

Beyond these individual missteps, Prabowo’s administration must also grapple with broader challenges, including fostering unity among diverse Cabinet members, navigating complex economic issues, and ensuring effective policy implementation. The coming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of his presidency.

Stay tuned as we follow the developments in Indonesian politics and report on Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
