Premier League Stars could Dominate Asian Champions league

Former English premier League stars have the potential to be game-changers in the Asian Champions League, which kicks off Monday. Players like Ivan toney, Jesse Lingard, Riyad Mahrez, and Darwin Nunez all have a shot at winning Asia’s most prestigious club tournament.

Saudi clubs ruled the competition last season, claiming three of the semifinal spots. Al-Ahli ultimately lifted the trophy in May, playing before a crowd of 60,000 in Jeddah. Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal return as strong contenders this year.

As 2023,Saudi Pro League clubs have invested approximately $1.5 billion in players, fueled by the country’s Public Investment Fund takeover of leading teams, including Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr. This influx of talent is reshaping the Asian football landscape.

Ivan Toney joined Al-Ahli from Brentford in August 2024 and is eager to add an Asian Champions League title to his resume.

“It was great to win in front of our fans – they’re incredibly passionate,” Toney told The Associated Press.

Toney and Mahrez: A Promising Partnership

Toney netted six goals in last season’s continental competition and has quickly developed a strong connection with Riyad Mahrez, who previously won the UEFA Champions league with Manchester City in 2021. Their combined skill set could prove devastating for opposing defenses.

“If you make the right runs, players like Mahrez will find you,” Toney explained.”The standard of play in Saudi Arabia is very high.”
