Rapeseed Yields: Autumn Strategies for High Production

Optimizing Rapeseed Yields Through Autumnal Nutrient Management

High yields in rapeseed require intensive cultural management. A balanced nutrient supply in autumn is crucial for optimal rapeseed stock development before winter, directly impacting potential yield.

Fertilization Recommended from the 4-Leaf Stage

A rapeseed stock absorbs 40-80 kg of nitrogen per hectare in autumn. Under favorable conditions – consistent growth, late winter onset, and nitrogen from prior fertilization – absorption can reach up to 130 kg N/ha.

Rapeseed begins forming earnings organs shortly after emergence. Between the 3-10 leaf stages, buds for side shoots develop, which will produce flower systems in spring. This autumn development determines the plant’s earning potential, making adequate nutrient availability essential.

Regional Regulations:

Austria: Autumn rapeseed fertilization is permitted until October 31st (October 14th in groundwater protection areas), with a maximum of 60 kg N/ha, provided no other N-fertilization occurred between the previous harvest and rapeseed cultivation.Germany: Fertilization is allowed until September 30th, contingent on a demonstrated fertilizer requirement (no N-subsequent pre-crop, NMIN content <45 kg/ha). Application is limited to a maximum of 30 kg/ha Ammonium-N or 60 kg/ha total N. Water-soluble nutrients from mineral fertilizers are recommended starting at the 4-leaf stage. Early fertilization can hinder piling root formation; therefore, allowing a period of "hunger" until the 4-leaf stage is beneficial. In challenging establishment conditions (snail, flea beetle, soil crusting, etc.), applying a portion of the planned autumn fertilization can aid seedling development.Beyond Nitrogen: A Holistic Approach

Sufficient basic nutrient supply during pre-winter development is vital for frost hardiness. Nutrients must be readily available in water-soluble form for even young plants to access.
