New Drug Shows Promise in Treating Advanced Lobular Breast Cancer

A new drug, elacestrant, combined with fulvestrant, is demonstrating significant benefits for women with advanced hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative lobular breast cancer, a subtype frequently enough resistant to standard treatments. Understanding Lobular Breast Cancer

Lobular breast cancer is the second most common type of breast cancer,accounting for approximately 10-15% of all diagnoses. Elacestrant: A New Approach

Elacestrant is an oral selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD). Unlike some other hormone therapies that block estrogen receptors, elacestrant actively degrades them, reducing their levels within cancer cells. This mechanism of action is thought to be notably effective against lobular breast cancer,which frequently enough exhibits resistance to other hormone therapies.

The EMILIA Trial Results

The positive results come from the EMILIA trial,a Phase 3 study involving 473 women with advanced hormone receptor-positive,HER2-negative lobular breast cancer who had progressed on prior endocrine therapy. The trial compared elacestrant plus fulvestrant to fulvestrant alone. Key findings include:
