Terna Invests $25 Billion in Italy’s Grid to Support Renewable Energy Growth
Italy’s power grid operator, Terna SpA, is undertaking a significant investment of over $25 billion (23 billion euros) over the next decade to modernize and expand the nation’s electricity grid. This substantial financial commitment aims to facilitate the integration of increasing renewable energy sources and enhance the overall transport capacity of the grid, aligning with both national and European energy transition targets .
Investment Details and Strategic Goals
The $25 billion investment represents a 10% increase compared to Terna’s previous ten-year plan. According to Terna, these upgrades are “essential to the pursuit of national and European targets in terms of energy transition and independence, resilience and efficiency of the electricity system” . The plan focuses on rolling out recent power infrastructure by 2030 to support Italy’s energy transition.
Key Infrastructure Projects
Several key infrastructure projects are central to Terna’s development plan:
- Tyrrhenian Link: A major transmission link.
- Adriatic Link: Another crucial transmission line.
- Sardinia-Corsica-Tuscany Connection: An interconnection project between these regions.
- Italy-Tunisia Energy Bridge: A project to connect Italy’s grid with Tunisia.
Renewable Energy Capacity Growth
Italy’s national energy and climate plan, established in 2024, projects a substantial increase in solar and wind power capacity. The plan anticipates a rise of 65 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and 94 GW by 2035, compared to 2023 levels . Demand for grid connections from renewable energy plants, storage systems and data centers is reportedly increasing .
Italy’s Evolving Energy Policy
Alongside the expansion of renewable energy, Italy is also revisiting nuclear power. The Italian government recently approved a proposal to draft legislation that could lead to the return of nuclear power generation after a hiatus of over four decades. Italy previously halted nuclear reactors after a 1987 referendum following the Chernobyl disaster, and again rejected nuclear power in a 2011 referendum .
Record Solar Power Production in 2025
Demonstrating the growth of renewable energy in Italy, solar power production reached a new record in 2025, increasing by 25% compared to 2024 to 44.3 terawatt hours (TWh) .
Terna’s investments and Italy’s evolving energy policies signal a strong commitment to a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
