Antioquia Schools Enrich Student Lives with Expanded Day Program

Antioquia, Colombia is making waves in education with the launch of a comprehensive extended day program for all schools province-wide, starting January 20, 2025. Building on a successful pilot program in 14 institutions in 2024, the initiative aims to revolutionize learning by addressing both academic and nutritional needs of students.

This forward-thinking approach prioritizes holistic development, ensuring that children not only receive quality education but also have access to nourishing meals throughout their extended learning hours. Marta Ligia Restrepo, head of the Las Cruces Educational Institute in San Andrés de Cuerquia, underscores the program’s dual focus: “The most important thing: the students are taken care of in terms of food, because on those days when there is an extended day, we have snacks and lunch so they can finish their day.”

The program’s ambition is bolstered by the School Feeding Program (SFP), which benefits approximately 311,000 children and represents a significant investment of 5,000 million pesos. Beyond addressing hunger, the SFP contributes to improved attendance and reduced dropout rates, fostering a more conducive learning environment. School transportation services are also integrated, ensuring safe and easy access to extended learning opportunities for all students.

Secretary of Education Mauricio Alviar expresses confidence in reaching the ambitious goal of 430,000 places across 116 municipalities by the end of the year. “We are close to 80% registration, and we are very confident that we will get there 100%, hopefully next week. “

Recognizing the importance of literacy, the program prioritizes literacy development with an allocation of 40,000 million pesos. This dedicated funding addresses the significant challenge of reading comprehension, a key area where improvement is needed. The program includes specialized training for teachers, access to diverse reading materials, and individualized support for students who require extra assistance.

While the initiative faces logistical challenges in its widespread implementation, the strong government commitment and the promising results from the pilot phase offer optimism for its success. Dr. Camila Gómez, an expert in educational reform and child nutrition, believes this program has the potential to transform the landscape of education in Antioquia.

"This program has the potential to be a game changer. By addressing both academic and nutritional needs, it creates a more equitable and supportive learning environment. If successful, it could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges," explains Dr. Gómez.

"The focus on literacy and nutrition ensures that children are not only learning but also thriving, which is essential for their long-term success."

Antioquia’s extended day program stands as a testament to the transformative power of holistic education, paving the way for a brighter future for all its students.
