Rio Ferdinand Details ‘Scary’ Dubai Lockdown Amid Missile Strikes
Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has described a frightening experience as his family sheltered during recent missile strikes in Dubai. The incident prompted a lockdown situation reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the Ferdinand family to take refuge in their home.
Escalating Regional Tensions
The unrest stems from escalating military activity in the Middle East, specifically following Iranian missile launches in response to U.S. Military action. These launches placed parts of the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, under heightened alert.
Ferdinand’s Account
Speaking on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the 47-year-vintage explained the unsettling experience. “It’s frightening when you hear missiles, planes and fighter jets going above us,” he said. “You’re hearing big bombs, and we don’t know the details of what they are.”
Ferdinand emphasized the challenge of reassuring his children during the crisis. “It’s telling your kids what it is and helping them navigate through this moment, which is important especially as the dad of the house. You want to try and remain calm and preserve everybody as calm as possible.” He admitted, “I’ve got to be honest guys, it’s been a bit of a scary situation.”
Family Life During the Lockdown
The Ferdinand family, including his wife Kate and their children Cree, Shae, and Rio’s daughter Tia, relocated to Dubai in August 2025. Ferdinand described how the situation led to unexpected family time, similar to the COVID-19 lockdowns, with home-schooling and shared activities. He also expressed a sense of security, noting that the UAE government was effectively managing the situation.
Kate Ferdinand’s Perspective
Kate Ferdinand shared her experience on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the government’s efforts to maintain safety. She acknowledged her nerves but affirmed that she felt her family was in safe hands. She also noted that their children, Cree and Shae, viewed the basement shelter as a fun sleepover.
Other British Residents Affected
Other British citizens in Dubai reportedly sought shelter in underground car parks and nightclubs as a precaution. Former footballer Graeme Souness also reported being stranded in Abu Dhabi due to the situation, hearing “loud bangs” at the airport.
