Rising senior Emily Lewis of Ripley High School is dedicated to addressing the critical shortage of vision care in Appalachian communities. Her ambition will be significantly aided by winning the prestigious West Virginia Scholar program, a full-tuition and room & board scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC), commencing in Fall 2026. Lewis intends to major in either biology or chemistry as a foundational step toward a career in optometry.

“this scholarship lifts a tremendous weight off my shoulders and my family’s, providing a secure path toward my future,” Lewis expressed.

Her interest in eye care stemmed from personal experience and a growing awareness of the disparities in healthcare access within the Appalachian region. According to the National Eye Institute, over 61 million adults in the US are at high risk for serious eye diseases, and access to preventative care is often limited in rural areas. Lewis aims to directly combat this issue.

She serves as assistant drum major for the Viking Marching Band and participates in basketball and track. Her involvement extends to academic honor societies including Tri M Music Honorary Society, National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta (national Mathematics Honor Society). She recently completed the 2025 Rhododendron Girls State program, a leadership and civic engagement initiative.

Andrew harris of Elkins High School and Lucas Christopher Raney of Woodrow Wilson High School were awarded $5,000 and $2,500 scholarships respectively, as the first and second runners-up in the competition.

All finalists are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship, WVWC’s most competitive academic award. Historically, approximately two-thirds of West Virginia Scholar Program finalists have chosen to attend WVWC over the past 17 years, going on to prosperous careers in fields like healthcare, law, business, and education. This demonstrates the program’s effectiveness in identifying and nurturing future leaders.
