Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director and Special Counsel, Dies at 81
Robert S. Mueller III, the former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Special Counsel who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election, died on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 81.
Early Life and Career
Born into an affluent New York family and raised outside of Philadelphia, Mueller graduated from Princeton University and later earned a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart The Guardian.
FBI Directorship
Appointed as the Director of the FBI by President George W. Bush in 2001, Mueller assumed the role one week before the September 11th terrorist attacks. He led the bureau through a significant transformation, shifting its focus to counterterrorism and improving information sharing within the intelligence community AOL. He served in the position for 12 years, a tenure second only to J. Edgar Hoover AOL.
Special Counsel Investigation
In 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as Special Counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and potential coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign Wikipedia, AP News. The investigation resulted in indictments against 34 individuals, including several Trump associates and Russian intelligence officers The Guardian.
The Mueller report, released in 2019, detailed a systematic Russian campaign to interfere in the election, but it did not establish sufficient evidence to conclude that the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government. Mueller declined to make a prosecutorial determination regarding potential obstruction of justice by President Trump, citing Justice Department policy The Guardian.
Later Life and Reaction
Mueller retired from public service after completing the Special Counsel investigation. The New York Times reported last year that Mueller had Parkinson’s disease The Guardian. Former President Donald Trump reacted to Mueller’s death with a statement on his Truth Social platform, saying, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” The Guardian.
Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann, and two daughters.
