In April 2026, Microsoft will roll out a free software update to the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming PC, introducing Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR)—an AI-powered feature designed to enhance game visuals. This update aims to improve the gaming experience without requiring any hardware upgrades or additional costs.

What Does Auto SR Do?

Auto SR leverages artificial intelligence to upscale games from 720p to 1080p or higher resolutions . The feature is designed to boost performance by up to 30% by optimizing how the Ally X processes graphics. Unlike Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Auto SR operates at the operating system level, meaning developers won’t need to individually integrate it into their games.

Why is Auto SR Exclusive to the Ally X?

The ROG Xbox Ally X is equipped with the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset, which includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This NPU is specifically designed for AI and machine learning tasks, enabling real-time upscaling of games without significantly increasing the CPU load. The standard ROG Xbox Ally model does not have an NPU, making it incompatible with the Auto SR feature.
