France Condemns Russia’s designation of Reporters Without Borders as ‘Undesirable Institution’

France has voiced strong disapproval following Russia’s decision to add Reporters Without borders (RSF) to its list of “undesirable organizations.” The move, announced on August 18, 2025, is widely seen as a further escalation in the Russian government’s systematic crackdown on independent journalism and freedom of expression.

The French government asserts that this designation is part of a broader campaign to silence dissenting voices and suppress critical reporting. This action demonstrates a clear disregard for internationally recognized principles of press freedom and access to facts.

France is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals currently imprisoned for political reasons in Russia. Moreover, France urges the Russian Federation to uphold its commitments to international law regarding the right to information and the freedom of the press, as enshrined in numerous treaties and conventions. The designation of RSF raises serious concerns about the safety and ability of journalists to operate within Russia and underscores the deteriorating environment for media freedom in the country.
