The festivities officially commenced this Friday with a proclamation event, recognizing the scout group’s enduring legacy of educating generations of young people in the community.

Founded in 1976 as ASDE Cantabria, Grupo Scout San José 582 has been a cornerstone of youth development in El Astillero for half a century. The group’s motto, “¡Siempre listos!” (Always Ready!), encapsulates its commitment to preparedness, service, and character building. The anniversary celebrations highlight the impact of scouting on the town’s social fabric.

Proclamation Ceremony Highlights Inclusion

Despite inclement weather, the proclamation ceremony drew a large crowd to the La Cantábrica tent. Iker Vélez, representing the scout group, led a retrospective journey through five decades of activities, including camps, excursions, and values-based learning. A key moment of the event was the inclusion of a sign language interpreter, a first for the proclamation, responding to a request from local residents and demonstrating a commitment to accessibility.

The ceremony featured representatives from multiple generations of scouts, from founding members Miguel Ángel and Gerardo to Begoña, one of the first girls to join the group, alongside current instructors and alumni.
