Sharks’ Growth Evident in Victory Over Canadiens, Playoff Push Continues

MONTREAL — The San Jose Sharks demonstrated marked improvement in a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre on Saturday, a win head coach Ryan Warsofsky characterized as a significant step forward for the young team.

The Sharks, up 3-2 entering the third period, held off a determined Canadiens squad in a raucous atmosphere that Macklin Celebrini described as “probably the hockey mecca of the world.” Celebrini, who recorded a three-point night, expressed his enjoyment of the win, stating, “It’s probably the hockey mecca of the world, so it was fun to win here tonight.”

San Jose outshot Montreal 8-7 in the final frame, focusing on smart puck management and disciplined play. Players like Will Smith prioritized safe plays over risky offensive maneuvers, dumping the puck in rather than forcing plays in congested zones.

“We kept short shifts, which it goes a long way,” defenseman Vincent Desharnais said. “We stay fresh.”

Forward Mario Ferraro noted the team’s straightforward approach: “I don’t think we messed around with the puck too much. It was pretty straightforward, hard off the glass, if we had to.”

Patience with the puck was also key, exemplified by Kiefer Sherwood’s east-west pass to Shakir Mukhamadullin, leading to a scoring chance and offensive zone faceoff.

Warsofsky highlighted the team’s progress in key areas: “We did some things that we’ve really wanted to dial in, and we did a really decent job of that. Through the rush, our defensive responsibilities coming out of the offensive zone.”

Sherwood led the offensive charge in the third period, registering three of San Jose’s eight shots, including several high-quality scoring opportunities. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was also crucial, stopping 25 of 27 shots, a performance Celebrini lauded as “amazing saves.”

Desharnais acknowledged a shift in the team’s ability to protect leads, stating, “In the past, we’ve been on our heels a little bit more, and I think the last few games where we have the lead, we don’t just back up.”

Warsofsky emphasized the team’s dedication to playing for injured teammate Igor Chernyshov, who was recently hospitalized after a hit from Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson. “You see a guy go down, you got to play for him. And I thought our guys did a really good job of that,” Warsofsky said.

The win keeps the Sharks in contention for a wild card spot in the Western Conference. Warsofsky reflected on the significance of the victory: “Saturday night in Montreal, what better place would you rather be?”

Assistant Equipment Manager Tim LeRoy was also celebrated for reaching his 2,500th professional game.

Ryan Warsofsky also specifically praised the strong defensive performances of Mario Ferraro and Vincent Desharnais.

Igor Chernyshov is expected to travel with the team to Ottawa, a positive sign regarding his recovery.
