SONY recently launched the PS Portal accessory, which allows users to play PS5 through network streaming. However, some users are obviously not satisfied with this indirect form, so some modders suddenly came up with the idea of shrinking the motherboard. The main problem in modification is heat dissipation. Since the power consumption of PS5 Slim reaches 200 W, and the heat dissipation design of the host itself is too bloated, almost all the original parts cannot be used.
Initially, the channel used a large pure copper radiator and heat pipe, plus a “purely handmade” nickel-plated copper base to fit the chip, and four sets of mini blowers to provide air flow. Unfortunately, the effect was not ideal, and I played for a short time after turning it on. After a while, the PS5 popped up an overheating warning.
In order to enhance heat dissipation, the team added a relatively smaller pure copper radiator and replaced the blower fan with three sets of special thin fans used in gaming laptops. This fan not only has stronger air flow and lower noise, but also has two The side air outlet feature can provide air flow for two radiators at the same time. The new solution has also successfully solved the heat dissipation problem, keeping the temperature of the chip under full operation at 42°C.
Then a 3D printer was used to create an exclusive back cover. In addition to continuing SONY’s black and white aesthetics for the PS5 5 console in terms of color, a specially designed stand was also added to allow the tablet to stand more conveniently on the table.
After solving the problem of heat dissipation, it’s the front screen part’s turn. This part is actually not that difficult to modify. However, the team felt that the image quality of the LCD screen was too poor, so they decided to sacrifice a Dell Alienware gaming laptop and put the equipment in it. The above 4K OLED screen has been transplanted to the PS5 tablet. Finally, the team replaced the PS5’s original power supply with a smaller GaN power supply, matched with homemade power cables, and solved the power supply needs in an external form.
The modified PS5 tablet is about the same size as a gaming laptop and can be easily stuffed into a backpack. And because it has a built-in screen, you only need to find an outlet to use it directly, without any additional preparation. The screen makes carrying and playing more convenient and mobile.
