Škoda auto Invests in Future-Proof Paint Shop at Mladá Boleslav Plant

Škoda Auto is substantially expanding its production capabilities with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art paint shop at its primary manufacturing facility in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. Scheduled for completion in 2029, this new facility will boost the plant’s daily painting capacity to 2,600 vehicle bodies, demonstrating Škoda’s commitment to both current and future automotive technologies. While the exact investment figure remains undisclosed, union representatives have indicated this project represents one of the largest and most strategically crucial investments in the company’s recent history.

A Modern Facility for a Diversifying Automotive Landscape

The new paint shop is designed to accommodate Škoda’s diverse model range, supporting vehicles built on multiple platforms – encompassing both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and the growing portfolio of electric vehicles (EVs). This adaptability is crucial as the automotive industry undergoes a rapid transition towards electrification. Currently, EVs represent approximately 13% of new car sales in Europe (as of Q1 2024, according to the European Automobile manufacturers Association), a figure projected to rise dramatically in the coming years. Škoda’s investment ensures its prepared to meet this evolving demand.

Advanced Technology & Sustainability at the Core

The project prioritizes a high degree of automation and robotic implementation, aiming to elevate the quality and consistency of protective coatings applied to vehicle bodies. Beyond quality, sustainability is a key driver. Škoda aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its czech plants by 2030, and this new facility will play a vital role in reaching that goal. The paint shop is projected to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and lower CO2 emissions by 28 percent. This reduction will be achieved, in part, through a combined energy source utilizing both biogas and electricity, enhancing operational flexibility and reducing both environmental impact and operational costs. For context, VOCs contribute to smog formation and can have adverse health effects, making their reduction a critical environmental concern.

Replacing Legacy Infrastructure & Expanding capacity

Škoda Auto currently operates two paint shops in Mladá Boleslav. The new facility will ultimately replace the original paint shop, which began operations in 1996. The second, more recent paint shop, launched in 2019, will continue to operate alongside the new line. The location for the new paint shop has been strategically chosen – on the site of an existing car parking area, adjacent to the newly constructed Laurina & Klementa bridge.

Scale and Specifications: A Colossal Undertaking

The sheer scale of the project is impressive. The building will span 301 meters in length and 131 meters in width, reaching a height of 32.5 meters. The floor area of 118,000 square meters is equivalent to over 16 football pitches, and the conveyor system alone will extend for 15 kilometers. This extensive infrastructure will allow for efficient and high-volume painting of a wide variety of vehicle models. To put this into outlook, the length of the conveyor system is roughly the distance of a half-marathon!

Financial Performance & Future outlook

Škoda Auto demonstrated strong financial performance in the previous year, with revenues increasing by 4.7 percent to EUR 27.8 billion (CZK 695.4 billion) and operating profit rising by 30 percent to EUR 2.3 billion (CZK 57.5 billion). Though, the Volkswagen Group as a whole experienced a decline in revenue (30.6 percent to EUR 12.39 billion) and operating profit (15 percent to EUR 19.1 billion) during the same period. This investment in the Mladá Boleslav paint shop signals Škoda’s determination to maintain its growth trajectory and contribute positively to the Volkswagen Group’s overall performance, notably as the automotive landscape continues to evolve.

This new paint shop isn’t just about increasing capacity; it’s a strategic investment in Škoda Auto’s future, positioning the company to thrive in a rapidly changing automotive world. It demonstrates a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the ability to adapt to the demands of both traditional and electric vehicle production.
