Ontario Sees Rise in Fatal Fires: Test Your Smoke Alarm
As 2020, Ontario has experienced a troubling increase in fatal residential fires and fire-related deaths. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided with a working smoke alarm. So far this year, Ontario has recorded 92 fire fatalities.
“The growing number of fatal fires and deaths across the province is deeply concerning,” said Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg. “It seems many people either feel too safe or mistakenly believe a fire won’t happen to them. Unfortunately, too many homes lack the basic protection of a working smoke alarm.”
To support Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, the Office of the Fire Marshal created the Saved by the Beep campaign. This year’s focus is on students, and includes a new online resource kit for teachers to use in Ontario classrooms. The kit delivers vital fire safety data to students aged four to 12 and their families. The OFM also teamed up with TVOKids and Science North in Sudbury to provide engaging, easy-to-understand programs that highlight the importance of smoke alarms and home fire escape plans.
“A working smoke alarm is a simple, effective tool that protects you and your family from fire,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “When every second counts, that early warning can be the difference between life and death. On Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, I urge everyone to test their alarms.”
