Spotify Unveils ‘100 Greatest Pop Songs of the Streaming Era’ – Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” Takes the Top Spot

Spotify has released its list of the ‘100 Greatest Pop Songs of the Streaming Era,’ a ranked playlist celebrating the most impactful pop tracks since January 1, 2015. Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 hit “Drivers License” claimed the No. 1 position, followed by Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now,” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away with Me” rounding out the top five.

The playlist, launched on February 26, 2026, reflects how streaming has transformed pop music, allowing for greater artistic expression beyond commercial success. According to a Spotify news release, the landscape now “embraces recent influences and styles although staying grounded in pop sounds.”

What Defines the ‘Streaming Era’?

Spotify defines the “streaming era” as spanning from January 1, 2015, to the present (February 16, 2026).

Taylor Swift’s Dominance

While Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” leads the list, Taylor Swift remains a dominant force on the platform. She secured six spots on the playlist with the following singles:

  • “Cruel Summer” at No. 3
  • “Delicate” at No. 15
  • “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” at No. 49
  • “Lover” at No. 57
  • “august” at No. 68
  • “Midnight Rain” at No. 75

As of 2024, Taylor Swift has amassed a total of 77 billion streams across all her songs on Spotify, making her the platform’s top artist overall MSN.

How Was the List Curated?

The ‘100 Greatest Pop Songs’ list was curated by a team of Spotify editors: Cecilia Winter (Global Hits Editorial Lead), Talia Kraines (Pop Editorial Lead), JJ Italiano (Head of Global Music Curation & Discovery), and Carl Chery (Urban Music Creative Director). The editors selected tracks based on qualitative criteria, including cultural impact, musicality, and artist storytelling. High stream counts were not a requirement, though many of the selected songs achieved widespread popularity.

Beyond the Top 100: Classic Pop Albums

Earlier in February, Spotify also released a playlist of ‘Classic Pop Albums of the Streaming Era,’ featuring albums such as Adele’s 2015 release “25,” Beyoncé’s 2016 release “Lemonade,” Chappell Roan’s 2023 “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” and Taylor Swift’s 2017 “reputation.” This list is unranked.
